Sankt Pölten (zängkt pöl`tən), city (1991 pop. 50,026), Lower Austria prov., N central Austria. It is an industrial center and rail junction. Manufactures include chemicals, office furniture, hosiery, machinery, textiles, and paper. Chartered in the 12th cent., Sankt Pölten has a Romanesque cathedral (consecrated 1150; rebuilt in the 18th cent.) and a town hall of the 16th–17th cent.

a city in Austria, in the Land of Lower Austria; situated in the foothills of the Alps, on the Traisen River. Population, 50,100 (1974). Sankt Pölten has machine-building, textile, furniture, printing, and food and condiments industries.

While Amstetten will likely forever be linked with the name of Fritzl and his abominable crime, Sankt Poelten went all out to ensure its name will not be similarly tainted, organising a reception with the mayor and a guided tour of the city for the hundreds of journalists who had come to cover the event.
The court in the Austrian town of Sankt Poelten said Fritzl would have to spend the rest of his life interned in a mental institute after a psychiatrist warned that the 73-year-old Fritzl felt 'born to rape.
