Santa Catarina (sän`tə kətərē`nə), state (1996 pop. 4,865,090), 37,060 sq mi (95,985 sq km), S Brazil. The capital is Florianópolis Florianópolis , city (1996 pop. 268,551), capital of Santa Catarina state, SE Brazil, on Santa Catarina Island. An administrative and cultural center and a port city, it is linked with the mainland by a huge suspension bridge (built 1926).

Santa Catarina is located along the upper course of the Uruguay (Uruguai) River. Its economy is based on agriculture. The state is Brazil’s second largest producer of grain. Other important crops are cassava, beans, tobacco, and grapes. Meat livestock is raised. Logging and the cultivation of maté are also important. Coal, primarily coking coal, is mined; Santa Catarina accounts for 70 percent of Brazil’s total output. Lead is also produced.
