On south-central border of AZ; organized Mar 15, 1899 (prior to statehood) from Pima County. Name Origin: For the Santa Cruz River, which flows through the county. From the Spanish meaning 'holy cross.'

    On S central coast of CA; original county; organized Feb 18, 1850 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: Spanish 'holy cross,' a common Spanish placename. Originally named Branciforte for the viceroy, but changed Apr 6, 1850.
