Ifni (ēf`nē), former Spanish possession (580 sq mi/1,502 sq km), SW Morocco, on the Atlantic Ocean. The main industry is fishing. Ifni was ceded by Morocco to Spain in 1860, but Spanish administration was nominal until 1934; from then until 1958 its capital, Sidi Ifni, was the residence of the governor-general of Spanish Sahara (now Western Sahara Western Sahara, territory (2005 est. pop. 273,000), 102,703 sq mi (266,000 sq km), NW Africa, occupied by Morocco. It borders on the Atlantic Ocean in the west, on Morocco in the north, on Algeria in the northeast, and on Mauritania in the east and south.

). Border clashes between Spanish and Moroccan troops occurred in 1957. Spain returned Ifni to Morocco in 1969.

Ifni

Region, southwestern Morocco. Located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, it has an area of some 580 sq mi (1500 sq km). It was settled in 1476 by Diego García de Herrera, lord of the Canaries, as a Spanish fishing, slaving, and trading locality. Abandoned in 1524 because of disease and the hostility of the local population, Spain reclaimed it following a treaty with Morocco in 1860. Effective Spanish reoccupation began in 1934, and it became part of Spanish West Africa in 1946. Ifni was ceded to Morocco in 1969.

Ifni
a former Spanish province in S Morocco, on the Atlantic: returned to Morocco in 1969

Ifni

a region in Morocco. Seized by Spain in 1860, the region was included in the Spanish zone of Morocco under the Franco-Spanish agreements of 1904 and 1912 for the division of spheres of influence in that country. In 1958, Spain proclaimed it a Spanish province. Its people long resisted the Spanish colonialists, and after many years of negotiations between the governments of Spain and Morocco, a treaty was concluded on Jan. 4, 1969, returning Ifni to Morocco. In June 1969 the region was reunited with Morocco, becoming part of Tarfaya Province.
