Agadir (ägädēr`, ăgədēr`), city (1994 pop. 155,244), SW Morocco, on the Atlantic Ocean. Agadir has metal-processing industries and exports fruit and vegetables. While France was establishing a protectorate in Morocco, the German gunboat Panther appeared (1911) in Agadir with the intention of protecting German interests. For a time war seemed imminent, but the Germans dropped their demands when France ceded to them a substantial part of the French Congo. In 1960, Agadir was almost completely destroyed by earthquakes, but a new urban district was built outside the old city.

Agadir

Seaport city (pop., 1994: 155,240), southwestern Morocco on the Atlantic coast. It was occupied in the 16th century by the Portuguese but later became an independent Moroccan port. After the 1911 Moroccan Crisis, it was occupied by French troops in 1913. Modern growth began with the port's construction in 1914 and the development of the fishing industry. In 1960 the city was virtually destroyed by a pair of earthquakes, a tidal wave, and a fire; a new city centre was rebuilt south of its original location. It is also a marketplace for the surrounding agricultural area.

Agadir
a port in SW Morocco, which became the centre of an international crisis (1911), when a gunboat arrived to protect German interests. Britain issued a strong warning to Germany but the French negotiated and war was averted. In 1960 the town was virtually destroyed by an earthquake, about 10 000 people being killed. Pop.: 385 000 (2003)

Agadir

a city in extreme southwestern Morocco, on the Atlantic coast; the administrative center of Agadir Province. The population is about 50,000 (1968). Agadir is a port (freight turnover 349,000 tons, 1966) that serves the Sous District. (Citrus fruit, early vegetables, and nonferrous metal ores are exported.) Agadir, with its sardine cannery, is one of the biggest industrial fishing centers of the country. There is a cement plant in the city and sea resorts in its environs. Agadir was founded in the 16th century. Since 1911, Agadir has been well known in connection with the Agadir incident. The city was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1960.
