In north-central NM, northeast of Albuquerque; original county; organized Jan 9, 1852 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the capital of NM and the county seat; Spanish 'Holy Faith.'

Area (sq mi): 1910.79 (land 1909.19; water 1.60). Pop per sq mi: 73.80.
Pop 2005: 140,855. State rank: 3. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.90%; 1990-2000 30.70%. Pop 2000: 129,292 (White 45.50%; Black or African American 0.60%; Hispanic or Latino 49.00%; Asian 0.90%; Other 25.00%). Foreign born: 10.10%. Median age: 37.90.
Income 2000: per capita $23,594; median household $42,207; Pop below poverty level: 12.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $29,627-$32,378.
