São Tiago: see Cape Verde Cape Verde , Port. Cabo Verde, officially Republic of Cape Verde, republic (2005 est. pop. 418,000), c.1,560 sq mi (4,040 sq km), W Africa, in the Atlantic Ocean about 300 mi (480 km) W of Dakar, Senegal. It is an archipelago made up of 10 islands and 5 islets.

The growth in the tourist sector is likely to continue as a result of the completion of a new international airport outside the Cape Verdean capital Praia on the island of Sao Tiago.

Unlike other African archipelagic states, there has been little or no political tension between the various island communities, possibly because over half the population lives on Sao Tiago, the largest of the main nine islands and the location of the national capital, Praia.
