Born July 23, 1823, in Saint-Zacharie, Var; died Jan. 28, 1895, in Aix-en-Provence. French paleobotanist. Member of the Paris Academy of Sciences (1876).

Saporta pioneered the study in France of fossil dicotyledonous plants, primarily from the Cenozoic and Mesozoic eras. An advocate of Darwin’s theory of evolution, Saporta provided additional support for the theory, using paleobotanical evidence.
