Sapozhnikov, Leonid Mikhailovich
Born Apr. 16 (29), 1906, in Pavlograd, in what is now Dnepropetrovsk Ob-last; died Feb. 24, 1970, in Moscow. Soviet chemist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946). Upon graduating from the Dnepropetrovsk Mining Institute in 1930, Sapozhnikov worked at the Dnepropetrovsk Institute of Coal Chemicals, also teaching at the Dnepropetrovsk Chemical Engineering Institute. In 1937 he became director of a laboratory in the Institute of Fuel Resources of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His principal works were devoted to the technological processes involved in the coking of coal. Sapozhnikov was awarded two Orders of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
