Sapozhnikov, Vasilii Vasil’evich 

Born Nov. 27 (Dec. 9), 1861, in Perm’; died Aug. 11, 1924, in Tomsk. Soviet botanist and geographer. Student of K. A. Timiriazev.

In 1884, Sapozhnikov graduated from Moscow University. He was a professor at the University of Tomsk from 1893 until his death. His principal works were on plant physiology and the geographical characteristics of nature in the Altai and Semi-rech’e. Sapozhnikov studied the accumulation of proteins and carbohydrates in leaves during photosynthesis. He collected an extensive herbarium. Sapozhnikov described in detail Altai vegetation and investigated modern Altai glaciation. Two peaks in the Tien-Shan and one of the glaciers of the southern Altai have been named after him. Sapozhnikov was awarded the N. M. Przheval’skii Medal in 1900 and the P. P. Semenov Medal in 1911.
