Winnemucca, Sarah (b. Thocmetony) (?1844–91) Northern Paiute educator, interpreter, writer; born near Humboldt Lake, Nev. She served often as an interpreter with the U.S. Army, looking to it for fair treatment for Indians and urging her people to keep the peace. She worked tirelessly, although ultimately unsuccessfully, for a permanent Paiute reservation. In 1884 she published Life Among the Paiutes.

Characters are drawn from America's diverse cultures, including King Kamehameha I of Hawaii (America's only king) and Sarah Winnemucca, a Paiute Indian woman who started a school for Native Americans around 1880.
Sarah Winnemucca, for example, was the first Native American woman to publish a book.
