portcullis portcullis Sarasin the surname of two Swiss travelers and scientists who were cousins. Karl Friedrich (Fritz) Sarasin was born Dec. 3, 1859, in Basel, and died there Mar. 23, 1942. Paul Benedikt Sarasin was born Dec. 11, 1856, in Basel, and died there Apr. 7, 1929. Traveling together through the islands of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and Sulawesi (Celebes), the Sarasins collected and analyzed valuable data on natural science and ethnography. Fritz Sarasin also explored New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, and Thailand. The cousins published many volumes describing their travels; their books contain extensive information on the natural features and people of the countries visited.
