Name Origin: Variously attributed to Spanish and Indian sources. One version states that the Spanish gave this name to the area, with the meaning 'place of dancing'; another explanation is that this was the site of a Seminole village named Sarasota, meaning 'point of rocks.' Area (sq mi): 725.18 (land 571.55; water 153.63). Pop per sq mi: 640.80. Pop 2005: 366,256. State rank: 14. Pop change: 2000-20005 12.40%; 1990-2000 17.30%. Pop 2000: 325,957 (White 89.80%; Black or African American 4.20%; Hispanic or Latino 4.30%; Asian 0.80%; Other 2.30%). Foreign born: 9.30%. Median age: 50.50. Income 2000: per capita $28,326; median household $41,957; Pop below poverty level: 7.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $39,564-$41,627. Unemployment 2004: 4.00%. Change from 2000: 1.20%.
