Sarek Sjöfallet
a protected territory in the mountains of Scandinavia; located in northern Sweden, in Norrbotten County. Area, 533,000 hectares (1974). Sarek Sjöfallet includes the following national parks: Sarek (established 1909; area, 194,000 hectares [ha]), Stora Sjöfallet (1909; 138,000 ha), and Padjelanta (1962; 201,000 ha). In the territory, mountain landscapes with glaciers, lakes, and waterfalls are preserved in their natural state. There are small-leaved and coniferous forests. Mammals include the Eurasian brown bear, wolverine, wolf, lynx, and arctic fox; birds include the golden eagle. There are many waterfowl in the Sjaunja wildlife sanctuary (290,000 ha), which borders on Sarek Sjöfallet in the north and east. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
