Sarett, Lewis (Hastings) (1917–  ) chemist, inventor; born in Champaign, Ill. A graduate of Northwestern University with a Ph.D. from Princeton, he went to work as a chemist for Merck Research Laboratories in New Jersey, where in 1944 he prepared the first synthetic cortisone. A collaborator on some 100 technical papers and patents, he rose to senior vice-president for science and technology in a long career at Merck.
