Sari (särē`), city (1991 pop. 167,602), capital of Mazandaran prov., N Iran, near the Caspian Sea. It is the trade center for a farm region where citrus fruit, cotton, rice, and sugarcane are grown. Manufactures include textiles, carpets, and mosaics. The city is served by roads and a railroad.
Sari a city in Iran and capital of Mazandaran Ostan (Province). Population, 50,000 (1971). Sari is linked by railroad and highway with Tehran. It has facilities for the milling of rice and the ginning of cotton. It also has tea and tobacco factories. Sari a woman’s garment worn in India that consists of a straight piece of material 4.5–9 m long and 1 m wide. One end of the material is wound twice around the hips, draping the legs. The upper edge of a sari is attached to the tight belt of an underskirt and then tossed over one shoulder. In the street women usually wear this end over the head like a shawl. A short blouse with short sleeves is worn under a sari. The sari is worn somewhat differently by distinct population groups.
