Sarmen

Sarmen 

(pen name of Armenak Sarkisovich Sarkisian). Born Feb. 16 (Mar. 1), 1901, in the village of Pakhvants, western Armenia. Soviet Armenian poet. Honored Cultural Worker of the Armenian SSR (1967). Member of the CPSU since 1941.

Sarmen graduated from the department of philology of the University of Yerevan in 1932. His published works first appeared in 1919. His verse collections include The Fields Are Smiling (1925), Flight (1935), Land of Songs (1940), Homeland (1944), Father’s House (1955), Fires of Anguish (1957), Armenian Heart (1960), and My Dreams (1969). Sarmen has also written children’s books. His poetry is characterized by an elevated romantic tone and elements of Armenian epic folk literature. Sarmen wrote the words to the anthem of the Armenian SSR. He has been awarded three orders and various medals.
