Sarts
the traditionally settled branch of the Uzbek people. Before the October Revolution of 1917, the name “Sarts” was used chiefly by Kazakhs and seminomadic Uzbeks to describe the settled Uzbeks and, to a certain extent, the plains Tadzhiks. In the Tashkent, Fergana, and Khwarazm oases and in southern Kazakhstan, “Sarts” was the name settled Uzbeks called themselves. Today the term appears only in scholarly literature.
