Sarvastivada

One of the 18 schools of Hinayana Buddhism that developed during the first four or five centuries after the Buddha's death. The name literally means the teaching that everything exists, which relates to the notion that the past, present, and future all exist. The Sarvastivada school was particularly influential in northwestern India and portions of Southeast Asia.

In the earlier fragments of texts discovered in Xinjiang, such as the Chatushparishatsutra, (6) which is part of the Dirghagama of the Sarvastivada and Mulasarvastivada, the Mahavadanasutra, (7) and even in the Mahaparinirvanasutra, (8) the name of the Bodhisattva Maitreya does not find mention.
After a very able introduction, contributors address the Sarvastivada and Mahasamghika controversy, the practice of Buddhism in Gandhara and its spread in Serindia amongst Iranians and Turks before the thirteenth century, the possibility that Buddhism reached Greece, the road from India to China, the accounts in the Samguk yusa, the Buddhist way into Tibet and its later spread, Buddhism amongst the Mongols, and the spread of Zen Buddhism.
The Sarvastivada has been mentioned as one of the oldest schools and its history in the Indian records begins with Thera Moggaliputta Tissa who was head of the Third Council, convened by Emperor Asoka.
