Sarychev, Gavriil Andreevich
Born 1763 in St. Petersburg; died there July 30 (Aug. 11), 1831. Russian navigator and hydrographer. Admiral (1829). Honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1809). Sarychev joined the navy in 1775. From 1785 to 1794 he took part in an expedition under the command of I. I. Billings. He described and mapped the shores of the Sea of Okhotsk between Okhotsk and Aldoma, as well as many of the Aleutian Islands, particularly Unalaska Island. Other areas described by Sarychev include the Pribilof Islands, St. Matthew Island, St. Lawrence Island, the Diomede (Gvozdev) Islands, and King Island. From 1802 to 1806, Sarychev was head of the Baltic Hydrographie Expedition; after 1808 he supervised hydrographie research in Russia.
