Satanta (b. Set-tainte, “White Bear”) (1830–78) Kiowa chief; born on the northern Great Plains. Under extreme pressure he signed the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1867, ceding tribal lands in exchange for a reservation in the Indian Territory. Known for his oratory as well as his bravery, he committed suicide while in prison for a crime he probably did not commit. How to thank TFD for its existence?
