Satir, Virginia (Mildred) (1916–88) educator, psychotherapist; born in Neillsville, Wis. She studied at the University of Chicago (M.A. 1948) and pioneered in the development of family therapy by conducting workshops nationwide. She helped found the Mental Research Institute (1959) and established the International Human Learning Resource Network (1979). Her publications include Peoplemaking and Self-Esteem.
