Savannakhet

 

a city in central Laos, on the Mekong River; capital of Savannakhet Province. Population, 35,700 (1967). Savannakhet is a river port and the terminus of a highway connecting Laos with southern Vietnam; it also has an airport. The city is a center for sericulture; there is also ship repair. An electric power plant is located in the city.
