Savary, Anne Jean Marie René (än zhäN märē` rənā` sävärē`), 1774–1833, French general in the Napoleonic Wars. He presided (1804) at the trial of the duc d'Enghien Enghien, Louis Antoine Henri de Bourbon-Condé, duc d' , 1772–1804, French émigré; son of Louis Henri Joseph de Condé (see under Condé, family).

 and was created (1808) duke of Rovigo. In 1808 he lured King Ferdinand VII Ferdinand VII, 1784–1833, king of Spain (1808–33), son of Charles IV and María Luisa. Excluded from a role in the government, he became the center of intrigues against the chief minister Godoy and attempted to win the support of Napoleon I.

 as minister of police, Savary did not approach his predecessor's skill and efficiency. After the Bourbon restoration he was condemned to death, but he escaped and in 1819 was allowed to return to France. After the Revolution of 1830 he commanded an expedition to Algeria.
