Savinskii, Vasilii Evmen’evich
Born Mar. 24 (Apr. 5), 1859,’in St. Petersburg; died Feb. 20, 1937, in Leningrad. Russian painter, graphic artist, and teacher. From 1875 to 1882, Savinskii studied under P. P. Chistiakov at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. Between 1883 and 1888 he lived in Germany, France, and Italy, supported by a stipend from the academy. In 1911 he became a member of the academy, where he taught from 1889 to 1930. From 1888 he taught at the Shtiglits Central School of Drafting. A follower of Chistiakov’s pedagogical system, Savinskii demanded of his students a thorough study of the model, a rigorous analysis of form, a disciplined drawing technique, and an exact rendering of natural color relationships. His students included I. I. Brod-skii, A. A. Rylov, M. G. Manizer, V. A. Serov, P. A. Shillin-govskii, and Iu. M. Neprintsev. Savinskii is also known as a painter of historical scenes and portraits.
