Savitskii, Evgenii Mikhailovich 

Born Jan. 17 (30), 1912, in Moscow. Soviet physical chemist and metallurgist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966). Member of the CPSU since 1930.

After graduating from the Moscow Institute of Nonferrous Metals and Gold in 1936, Savitskii began working at the N. S. Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1954 he began working at the A. A. Baikov Institute of Metallurgy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and in 1975 he became the institute’s director. Savitskii’s principal works have been devoted to the physical chemistry and physical metallurgy of rare, nonferrous, and refractory metals. In particular, they have dealt with the prediction of new inorganic compounds, together with the properties of these compounds, from computer calculations using the elec-trostructure of the various components as data.

Savitskii has been awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1953, 1968) and the N. S. Kurnakov Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1973). He has also received three orders and a number of medals.
