Savonlinna

Savonlinna (sä`vōnlĭn'nä), Swed. Nyslott, city (1996 pop. 28,826), Eastern Finland prov., SE Finland. Situated in the Saimaa Saimaa (sī`mä), lake system c.1,850 sq mi (4,790 sq km), occupying the heavily glaciated plateau of S central Finland.

 lake region, it is a resort, inland port, and road and railroad junction, with a large plywood industry, machine shops, and sawmills. It was built around the 15th-century fortress of Olavinlinna (Swed. Olofsborg) and was chartered in 1639.
