Savonlinna

Savonlinna (sä`vōnlĭn'nä), Swed. Nyslott, city (1996 pop. 28,826), Eastern Finland prov., SE Finland. Situated in the Saimaa Saimaa , lake system c.1,850 sq mi (4,790 sq km), occupying the heavily glaciated plateau of S central Finland. It comprises more than 120 connecting lakes; the large southern basin of the system constitutes Lake Saimaa proper (c.500 sq mi/1,290 sq km).

 lake region, it is a resort, inland port, and road and railroad junction, with a large plywood industry, machine shops, and sawmills. It was built around the 15th-century fortress of Olavinlinna (Swed. Olofsborg) and was chartered in 1639.

Finland's Savonlinna Opera Festival, staged in a medieval castle on a lake of serene beauty, has been held annually every summer since 1967, but its history dates back about a century.
In Savonlinna over the weekend some 100 contestants from several parts of the globe gathered for the seventh annual Mobile Phone Throwing World Championship.
They focus on lakes in the developing world, their historical dimensions and cultural values in examples of Crater Lake, Oregon, Savonlinna, and New Zealand; tourist activities and perceptions in the Netherlands, Poland, and Finland; planning and management issues, including marketing and developing, and global concerns; and environmental issues.
