scarp: see escarpment escarpment or scarp, long cliff, bluff, or steep slope, caused usually by geologic faulting (see fault) or by erosion of tilted rock layers. An example of a fault scarp is the north face of the San Jacinto Mts. in California.

Scarp a steep (approximately 45°) and high (approximately 3 m) section of a slope or river bank facing the enemy; it was used as an antitank or antitransport barrier in an obstacle system. Scarps were built in conjunction with fortresses and in obstacle systems that were part of fortified border lines; they were also used in World War II.
