Schönbrunn (shönbr
n`), former imperial palace in Vienna, built during the reigns of Emperor Charles VI and Maria Theresa. Mainly designed by Fischer von Erlach Fischer von Erlach, Johann Bernhard , 1656–1723, the leading Austrian baroque architect. After studying in Rome he returned to Vienna. Its beautiful park, emulating Versailles, has a large zoological and botanical garden. Both palace and park were damaged during World War II. By the Peace of Schönbrunn (1809), imposed by Napoleon I Napoleon I , 1769–1821, emperor of the French, b. Ajaccio, Corsica, known as "the Little Corporal."
