Schairer, John Frank 

Born Apr. 4, 1904, in Rochester, N.Y.; died Sept. 26,1970, Chesapeake Bay. American geologist.

Schairer graduated from Yale University in 1925 and received a Ph.D. degree there in 1928. Beginning in 1927, he was a physical chemist in the geophysical laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. His main works were devoted to mineralogy, geochemistry, and physical chemistry.

Schairer was vice president of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (1957–60), president of the Mineralogical Society of America (1943), vice-president of the Geological Society of America (1944), and president of the American Geochemical Society (1960).
