Schalk, (Raymond William) Ray (1892–1970) baseball player; born in Marvel, Ill. During his 18-year career as a catcher (1912–29), primarily with the Chicago White Sox, he established many league records for fielding. Nicknamed "Cracker," he was an honest member of the "Black Sox" club that conspired to lose the 1919 World Series. In 1955 he was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame.
