Schapiro, Miriam

Schapiro, Miriam (1923–  ) painter; born in Toronto, Canada. Born of American parents, she studied at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1937–41), and at the State University of Iowa (1943–49). Based in New York and California, she was, by 1955, a feminist abstract expressionist, collagist, and cofounder, with Judy Chicago, of the Feminist Art Program in California (1972–75). She was also a founder of Womanhouse (1972), a female art environment in California.
