schema Pronounced "skee-mah." The definition of a data structure such as a database or XML file. Schemas describe the data elements and their interrelationships. See database schema and XML schema.schema 1. (in the philosophy of Kant) a rule or principle that enables the understanding to apply its categories and unify experience 2. Psychol a mental model of aspects of the world or of the self that is structured in such a way as to facilitate the processes of cognition and perception 3. Logic an expression using metavariables that may be replaced by object language expressions to yield a well-formed formula. Thus A = A is an axiom schema for identity, representing the infinite number of axioms, x = x, y = y, z = z, etc. schema [′skē·mə] (computer science) A logical description of the data in a data base, including definitions and relationships of data. Schema the highest monastic degree in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Monks and nuns who take the vows of the schema are pledged to fulfill strict monastic rules, which by their degree of difficulty distinguish the great (angelic) schema and the little schema.
