Schereschewsky, Samuel (Isaac Joseph) (1831–1906) missionary, translator; born in Tauroggen, Lithuania. He came to the U.S.A. in 1854 as a Christian convert from Judaism, and after seminary training, he went as a missionary to China (1859). He was Protestant Episcopal Bishop of Shanghai (1877–83) and translated the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer into Chinese. He spent his last decade in Japan.
