Schippers, Thomas (1930–77) conductor; born in Kalamazoo, Mich. A brilliant talent, he made his public debut at age 18. During the 1950s he conducted at the Metropolitan Opera and guested internationally; he conducted the Cincinnati Symphony for six years before his death from cancer.
