Schmidt, Wilhelm Matthäus 

Born Jan. 21,1883, in Vienna; died there Nov. 27,1936. Austrian geophysicist.

After graduating from the University of Vienna in 1905, Schmidt worked at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics in Vienna. In 1912 he became a teacher at the Higher School of Soil Science in Vienna, where he became a professor in 1919. Beginning in 1930, he was a professor and director of the meteorological observatory of the University of Vienna.

Schmidt studied the turbulent mixing of the lower layers of the atmosphere and lake waters and introduced the concept of the coefficient of mixing.
