In south-central NY, west of Albany; organized Apr 6, 1795 from Albany and Otsego counties. Name Origin: For the Schoharie Creek, which runs through it; from Iroquoian for 'driftwood.' Variants include: skoharle, towasschoher, shoary, skohary, and schughhorre.

Area (sq mi): 626.36 (land 622.02; water 4.34). Pop per sq mi: 51.90.
Pop 2005: 32,277. State rank: 58. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.20%; 1990-2000 -0.90%. Pop 2000: 31,582 (White 95.30%; Black or African American 1.30%; Hispanic or Latino 1.90%; Asian 0.40%; Other 1.70%). Foreign born: 2.40%. Median age: 38.00.
Income 2000: per capita $17,778; median household $36,585; Pop below poverty level: 11.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,343-$23,633.
Unemployment 2004: 5.40%. Change from 2000: 1.20%. Median travel time to work: 28.50 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 40.50%.
