Schreckengost, Viktor (1906– ) ceramist; born in Sebring, Ohio. After studying at the Cleveland Institute of Art, he studied ceramics and sculpture in Vienna, Austria (1929–30), then returned to Cleveland. He had been persuaded to return by R. Guy Cowan of the Cowan Pottery Studio, outside Cleveland; Cowan allowed Schreckengost to teach at the Cleveland Institute of Art while making his own pottery—both his individual pieces and those for mass production. While his bowls and dinnerware as well as architectural ceramics and sculptural works had art deco elements, his pottery often had distinctly American design elements.
