Schrieffer, J. (John) Robert (1931–  ) physicist; born in Oak Park, Ill. After completing his graduate studies in Europe (1957–58), he then went to the Universities of Chicago (1958–59) and Illinois (1959–62). He moved to the University of Pennsylvania (1962–79), then joined the University of California: Santa Barbara (1980). A specialist in solid state physics, he and collaborators John Bardeen and Leon N. Cooper shared the 1972 Nobel Prize for developing the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory of superconductivity.
