Schulberg, Budd, 1914–, American writer, b. New York City, grad. Dartmouth, 1936. Because his father worked for Paramount Studios, Schulberg could observe the corruption of the film industry. His novel What Makes Sammy Run? (1941) is about the rise of a ruthless film magnate. Among his other novels are The Disenchanted (1950) and Sanctuary V (1969). He wrote the screenplay for On the Waterfront (1954), which also won an Academy Award for best story and screenplay. Schulberg helped found the Douglass House Watts Writers Workshop in Los Angeles in the late 1960s and New York's Frederick Douglass Creative Arts Center (1971).

Schulberg, he started working at age 17 as a publicist for Paramount, becoming a scriptwriter at 19. His 1941 novel, What Makes Sammy Run? was an inside look at Hollywood. During World War II he made documentary films with John Ford. Having flirted with Communism in the 1930s, he named certain Hollywood colleagues as fellow travelers during the McCarthy era.
