In east-central PA, west of Allentown; organized Mar 1, 1811 from Berks and Northampton counties. Name Origin: For the Schuylkill River, which traverses it; from Dutch schuy 'hidden,' and kill 'stream'.

Area (sq mi): 782.61 (land 778.36; water 4.25). Pop per sq mi: 189.40.
Pop 2005: 147,447. State rank: 23. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.90%; 1990-2000 -1.50%. Pop 2000: 150,336 (White 96.00%; Black or African American 2.10%; Hispanic or Latino 1.10%; Asian 0.40%; Other 0.90%). Foreign born: 1.00%. Median age: 40.90.
Income 2000: per capita $17,230; median household $32,699; Pop below poverty level: 9.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,879-$24,756.
