Schwarzschild, Martin (1912– ) astronomer; born in Potsdam, Germany. He came to Harvard College Observatory as a research fellow in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and won the Legion of Merit and a Bronze Star. At Princeton University beginning in 1947, he combined advances in nuclear physics with "balloon astronomy" to develop theories on stellar evolution.
