Schwarzschild criterion [′shvärts‚shilt krī‚tir·ē·ən]

(astrophysics)

A criterion for determining the stability of a stellar medium against convective motion, according to which convection takes place when the temperature gradient is greater than the gradient that would exist if the medium were adiabatic.
