On the southern border of OH; organized May 1, 1803 from Indian Territory. Name Origin: For the Scioto River, which flows through it; from an Iroquoian word of uncertain meaning, said by some scholars to be Wyandot 'deer.'

Area (sq mi): 616.07 (land 612.27; water 3.80). Pop per sq mi: 125.00.
Pop 2005: 76,561. State rank: 33. Pop change: 2000-20005 -3.30%; 1990-2000 -1.40%. Pop 2000: 79,195 (White 94.50%; Black or African American 2.70%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.20%; Other 2.10%). Foreign born: 0.60%. Median age: 36.70.
Income 2000: per capita $15,408; median household $28,008; Pop below poverty level: 19.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $19,714-$21,536.
