Scott Base

a permanent base and scientific station of the New Zealand Expedition in Antarctica. Scott Base is located on the low, rocky coast of the Hut Point Peninsula, 3 km from the main base, McMurdo. It was established on Jan. 20, 1957, and named in honor of R. Scott. In 1957–58 it served as a base for the New Zealand party of the Commonwealth Transantarctic Expedition, led by V. Fuchs, which established storage points for fuel and food between the south pole and Scott Base. Observations in atmospheric meteorology, geophysics, glaciology, oceanography, and biology are conducted at the base. The station also serves as a base for exploration along established routes in the adjacent regions of Antarctica.
