Lucas, Scott (Wike) (1892–1968) U.S. senator; born near Chandlerville, Ill. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives (Dem., Ill. 1935–39) and to the U.S. Senate (1939–1951), he supported the New Deal, serving as Democratic whip and Senate majority leader. His liberal beliefs left him politically vulnerable in the McCarthy era, and he was defeated in his bid for reelection to a third term.
