On central east coast of GA, north of Savannah; organized Dec 14, 1793 from Burke and Effingham counties. Name Origin: For Gen. James Screven (1744-78), an officer in the Revolutionary War. Originally spelled Scriven.

Area (sq mi): 655.59 (land 648.44; water 7.14). Pop per sq mi: 23.80.
Pop 2005: 15,430. State rank: 106. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.40%; 1990-2000 11.10%. Pop 2000: 15,374 (White 53.20%; Black or African American 45.30%; Hispanic or Latino 1.00%; Asian 0.30%; Other 0.90%). Foreign born: 1.70%. Median age: 36.20.
Income 2000: per capita $13,894; median household $29,312; Pop below poverty level: 20.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $17,995-$19,034.
