1. a tool used for turning screws, usually having a handle of wood, plastic, etc., and a steel shank with a flattened square-cut tip that fits into a slot in the head of the screw 2. an alcoholic beverage consisting of orange juice and vodka screwdriver [′skrü‚drīv·ər] (design engineering) A tool for turning and driving screws in place; a thin, wedge-shaped or fluted end enters the slot or recess in the head of the screw. screwdriver A tool having a handle and a long shank, with a tapered wedge-shaped tip which fits into the recess in the head of a screw; used for driving a screw in place or removing it, by turning the head of the screw. Screwdriver a mechanic’s assembly tool for screwing and unscrewing metal or wood screws and other threaded parts with slotted heads. The screwdriver is usually a shank with a blade at one end that is inserted into the slot during operation. The other end of the shank has a wooden or plastic handle.
