Scripps, E. W. (Edward Wyllis) (1854–1926) journalist; born near Rushville, Ill. He founded the Cleveland Penny Press in 1878, eventually adding some 30 other mass-audience papers in the first major U.S. newspaper chain. In 1907 he founded the United Press news service (later United Press International). A millionaire philanthropist, he left his empire to his son Robert Paine Scripps. |
