In south-central TX panhandle, northwest of Abilene; organized Aug 21, 1876 from Bexar County. Name Origin: Either for Gen. William Read Scurry (1821-64), Republic of TX legislator and jurist, publisher of the Austin State Gazette and Confederate army officer; or for Gen. Richardson Scurry (1811-62), TX legislator (1842-44) and U.S. representative (1851-53).
